Description:

Split-core current transformers (CTs) offer a convenient and accurate method for measuring AC electrical currents without the need to disrupt the existing wiring or power supply. Their defining feature is a split in the core, allowing the CT to be opened and placed around a conductor without disconnecting it.

This non-invasive design makes split-core CTs ideal for both retrofit installations, where existing systems need to be monitored, and semi-permanent metering applications, where occasional access to the conductor might be required. While split-core CTs may have a higher initial cost compared to other types, their ease of installation and the avoidance of downtime often justify the expense, especially when retrofitting existing installations.
