Description:
Recognizing that elevated carbon dioxide (CO2) levels in indoor environments can negatively impact human cognitive performance and well-being, accurate monitoring of this gas is essential for maintaining healthy indoor air quality. The DFRobot Gravity: I2C SCD41 Infrared CO2 Sensor offers a sophisticated yet user-friendly solution for this purpose. At its core lies Sensirion's innovative SCD41 miniature CO2 sensor, which leverages the non-dispersive infrared (NDIR) photoacoustic sensing principle. This technology, combined with Sensirion's proprietary PAsens® and CMOSens® advancements, delivers exceptional accuracy in a remarkably small form factor and at a competitive price point.
The SCD41 sensor operates by emitting pulses of infrared light into a measurement chamber. CO2 molecules present within this chamber absorb specific wavelengths of this light, causing them to vibrate and generate pressure waves. The intensity of these acoustic waves, measured by a highly sensitive internal microphone, is directly proportional to the concentration of CO2. The sensor's onboard processing then calculates the CO2 concentration, providing readings within the range of 400 to 5000 parts per million (ppm). To ensure accurate measurements across varying environmental conditions, the SCD41 also incorporates integrated temperature and humidity sensors. These sensors enable real-time on-chip compensation for temperature and humidity effects on the CO2 readings, and their data is also readily available for separate monitoring.
