Many portable electronic devices rely on lithium-ion or lithium-polymer batteries for power. A crucial aspect of these systems is the efficient management of both battery charging and power delivery (boost). Traditionally, these functions are handled by separate, dedicated circuits, leading to increased complexity, larger footprints, and higher component counts. This can be particularly problematic in space-constrained applications.
The Monolithic Power Systems (MPS) MP2636 addresses this challenge by integrating a highly efficient switch-mode battery charger with a system power path management feature into a single, compact chip. This integration simplifies design and reduces the overall system size. The MP2636 offers a seamless user experience: when a lithium battery is connected, the device can function as a portable power bank, providing regulated output power. Furthermore, when an external power supply is connected to the VIN input, the MP2636 automatically initiates battery charging, indicated by the illumination of the CHG LED. Conversely, when the external power source is removed, the boost converter automatically activates, drawing power directly from the connected battery to maintain system operation.
This automatic transition between charging and boosting makes the MP2636 a versatile and user-friendly solution for a wide range of portable applications, streamlining power management and reducing design complexity.
